Question re: KE CPC amounts and amounts from within Adwords.

Postby jewelrygal on Tue Jul 15, 2008 12:10 am

Hey, Loz, wondering about a discrepancy that I notice in CPCs.

While in KE, I put in the keyword "rose marie" (name of a movie) that comes up with CPC of 47-59c. But when I log into my Adwords acct, that keyword was listed as inactive because my minimum bid had to be $5.

I noticed this on other terms as well, like "metropolitan opera," which I was told I had to bid $10 for in Adwords and was inactive. Yet it was less about a dollar in KE.

There were like a half dozen search terms that went inactive (from my main business site) because the bids had to be $5 or $10.

Why does Adwords gauge me in their minimum bid to activate these keywords, when KE shows the bid amounts to be much less? And "rose marie" is showing only one Google campaign, so it isn't like it's that popular.

Thanks. Sharon

That would appear to be the dreaded google slap, google feels that the keywords you are using are not relevant to the page of yours, so it charges you more to prove that your advert works with your landing page, once it starts getting clicks, the price of the keyword will be reduced.

That's one theory any way, hard to say without looking at what you're doing.

The other is that KE needs to be upgraded to produce the correct data. But having saying that, what was the price that google asked for before you actually set up the campaign, if it was the 47-59c estimate, then it has something to do with what google feels is relevant to your landing page, and it's your job to prove to google that it is, which will cost you a little bit until you can get heaps of clicks on that advert before the price of the click is reduced.

When I first put in "metropolitan opera" last year as a keyword, the cost was about a dollar, as I recall. So, guess you're spot-on that google doesn't think the keyword is relevant. However, the website is about movie stars who were also opera singers, and my most successful pre-Internet advertising was always in the Met's "Opera News" magazine. Probably should have tweaked the actual ad and chosen the landing page as one of my books about Nelson's opera years.

Thanks for clarifying! :D
