Applied some Techniques from VGTP

Postby koconnor » Wed Sep 03, 2008 7:32 am

Hey all,

I have applied some techniques from VGTP today and am hoping to get some good results in the SERPs here in Ireland.

I focused my page around "asking for a pay rise" and hope it will do ok once Google visits. Could some of you take a look and tell me if there is anything you would have added or removed to help with the SEO? I typically do this sort of optimisation for my other pages, but implemented the title="abc" attribution idea :D Loz laid out in one of the videos.

Looking forward to your suggestions,

Kev.

I thought we went through this site MONTHS ago mate on the KE or SEO Elite forum.

K

<meta name="keywords" content="Asking, Pay Rise, How To, Ask">

no need to put commas in there, just put "asking for a pay rise"

then again, really no need to to place the keyword meta tag on the page, doesn't really do much any hows.

description is weak.
<meta name="description" content="How to Ask Your Boss for a Pay Rise, Asking For A Pay Rise">

should be more like.

Need a Pay Rise? We show you how to ask for a pay rise and get the rise you want - negotiate your pay rise now!

ya gotta remember, it's a pitch as well as a description of the page, if you can place keywords in there and make it turn more into a pitch, you'll get a higher click through via organic results.

I see that you just went to Digg, the page got indexed two hours ago. Your description there is very weak, weaker than the one you have on your page right now.

The description is one of the MOST important parts of your page, or any submission you do with a link on it, you need to think about the visitor, pull them in, spend time creating a worthy description with the keywords and related keywords in your description, not the same one for every submission, you're the professional here in your niche, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem creating different variations of a descriptive text to not only pull in visitors, but to help increase the overall relevancy of your page.

It's not just about submitting a link with desired anchor text, the more you can place related words in your text, gives a broader picture, in the search engines eyes, of what your page is about and ranks you high for it, if done properly.

This is what I refer to as "semantically related indexing". ;)

=======
ALT text, dont see any alt text on your images.
=====

use dreamweaver to make your page sizes smaller, the format in which the page is generating the code is awful, make it more se friendly,and use CSS too.
========

Title, is a bit weak too

Pay Rise: Did You Ask For Pay Rise? Negotiate Your Way - Here's How

It's more catchy too.

=======

I'd also create more articles, and probably re-do that page, it's not doing anything for me, looks more like a recorded conversation than anything, put some hard facts in it, or snippets of hard facts and link those up from your asking for a pay rise page, and create a string of documents all related to negotiating for a pay rise, etc, if you're a professional in this niche, you shouldn't have a problem creating about 20 articles with power words, linked up to other articles, etc.
========

You shouldn't have any problem ranking for "asking for a pay rise" at all, after checking for backlinks, you hardly have any, and it's been months since we discussed this mate and you've not done anything. :(

Hey Loz,

Thanks for the thorough reply.

I created this page earlier today as a different segment of salary negotiation for getting a job, today's was for asking for a pay rise once you are in there... But yeah I should have done more on the other one, you are 100% right.

Thanks for the information, I will put these steps in place this evening.

Thanks,

Kevin

Loz,

I used Frontpage 2003 for all my html editing. I have dreamweaver - do you recommend doing it from this program going forward?

Also, how does using Dreamweaver make the page smaller - I am not too sure about this bit. Are you saying the use of CSS will speed things up with page loading etc?

Cheers,

Kevin

Yup, that's why i said to use dreamweaver. :)

Dreamweaver doesn't leave unnecessary crap in the page like front page, nvu, eclipse, etc, using css files reduces the pages size.

Hi Loz,

Strange thing happened this morning, I went to check the placement of my webpage on Google.ie and noticed it has gone completely... from the allintitle results:

This term

I was coming up in the number one spot for that search result after optimising my page.

Now this morning I am not there. I am nowhere to be seen. Do you know why this happened at all? A few of my pages have gone from Google results also for various terms that it was ranking for.

Any ideas what happened?

Many thanks,

Kevin

It's up again now... :?

I was also ranking first and second for Higher Authority in Google Ireland, but now I'm nowhere:

with allintitle

and even without allintitle:

without

Do I just need patience and let the hare sit?

probably the same thing happened as before with the ask for a pay rise thingy, nothing to be alarmed about, this tends to happen as you start to get backlinks to your site, just keep getting back links in a normal manner and you'll be ok.
