Newest Google Policy Change about URL's?

Postby cedarberry on Fri Mar 28, 2008 8:18 pm

Loz...as you probably know by know Google has a new accouncement about display url must match its destination url (the url of your landing page). How does this square with affiliates using merchant's site as url and a clickbank affiliate hop link for a destination url with a code for merchant's landing page tacked on? Google has examples but they are confusing. And yes, this sounds like Google frowns on affiliates using merchant's site for display url and linking to merchant's landing page in the destination url. I guess this forces affiliates to create their own website and landing page...right? Or suffer slapdown? Ed.

Hi Ed,

Good question. ;)

It's perfectly fine Ed, in fact, it's a "re-enforcement" of the same rule. Nothing has changed. ;)

Hello Loz...I just hung up from talking to Google Advertising and I am confused? As you know after I got slapped down for a bad merchant's landing page I had to re-group. I followed your instructions to the letter...7 keywords and 3 to 4 ads for the top selling fatloss4idiots.com. I set the daily budget to $100 and $2.00 per click. Direct link to merchant's site.

Within in 30 minutes I had ads in Google search in No.1 spots in the top center and far right sidebar. It blew me away! My clicks were 118 for a total of $199. spent. Bad news is not one sale? Over the weekend I did drop daily budget down to $50 and changed max CPC to double the min. for a short time to see if ads quit showing and they did. So I went back up to the original settings. However I cannot spend $100 per day for 7 days?

So not using my own website and using one of four different (new) landing pages from merchant how do I match the display url to the destination url? Here's what I am using....Display URL: fatloss4idiots.com/fatlossdiet. Now the Destination URL looks like this: DonalD31.4Idiots.hop.clickbank.net?page=7575 and Google tells me today that I have to use my Destination URL for the Display URL? So they both match? Nobody does this?

Loz there are 4,500 affiliates advertising fatloss4idiots.com with direct linking and I have yet to see any display url using their clickbank ID? They use the merchant's site and I don't know what they use for destination url? Maybe they use that software "tinyurl" to code their destination URL? I don't see any tinyurl's out there?

Loz your adwords formula really works. I just need your help with the matching URL's? Thanks..Ed :roll:

What they say is not true. They're only telling you half of it, google are renowned for not telling you exactly how to do your campaigns properly cos all they are interested in is taking your money!

The display url has to "land" on the same top level domain.

i.e
domain1.com = display url
tracking.com = redirect url or affiliate url (destination url)
domain1.com = landing page.

the above is ok.

if it's like this.
domain1.com = display url
tracking.com = redirect url or affiliate url (destination url)
some-other-domain.com = landing page.

then you can't do that.

I thought we had this discussion before, I mentioned that I tried that program before and their landing page didn't convert very well. So I did my own and it converted much better. Plus I was bidding on keywords where the asking price was 50 cents or below, I ended up paying like 4 - 12 cents per click.

You're better off promoting your own website with their product. Far more control.

If $100 a day is too much, then you need to work out what you can afford. ;)
it works with any amount.

Start with say $20.00 a day MAX limit.

Double the CPC google asks for. (but do your keyword research first).
Then next day reduce the CPC to the price google asks..
then the next day deduct 10-20% off the top price.
then the next day, take 5-10 cents off the bid until you're not in position 1 any more. Once you're not in position 1, put the price back to where it was previously.

Important: always make sure that your campaign name is related to the keywords.

ie.

Weight Loss = campaign name.
lose weight = ad group.

keywords.
dieting tips
lose weight fast

etc,

no more than 7, or fewer to increase overall CTR percentage.

Ensure that you only do broad match here. with negative keywords like

free
cheap
simple
easy

etc.

then create another campaign, similar names to above, this time do exact match... repeat above.

then do another campaign, but do this for phrase match.

and only target one country at a time in any one campaign.

and turn off content network.

create new campaign for content networks. select sites for site targeting campaigns.
search for dieting forums, websites that have adsense on them and add their urls to the site targeting lists.

It will take a while for you to get this right, it's no easy task. I lost like $6k in my first attempt and gave it a rest for a while. but with practice, you'll get a hang of it.
